The PVC prescribes for the use of injectable Ivermectin to be given orally to adult dogs once per month for the prevention of heartworm disease. The licensee told the inspector that they have been using the pour-on Ivermectin instead. The inspector called and spoke with the Attending Veterinarian (AV) who states he does not endorse the use of pour-on Ivermectin. Heartworm disease is a parasitic infection spread by mosquitos. Affected dogs may be asymptomatic, or may have coughing, lethargy, or exercise intolerance. Correct by ensuring that sampling and treatment of parasites, including heartworm disease, be performed in accordance with a schedule and plan approved by the AV.
