The carpets were seen to have excessively frayed edges (2-3 inches in length) with longs strands (4-6 inches) of carpet fibers hanging off. In some cases, the puppies have ripped off these long strands and created small balls of tangled carpet fibers. Frayed edges and long strands of carpet fibers can be problematic because they may cause illness or injury if a puppy ingests the pieces of carpet or if they wrap around their appendages. Correct by ensuring all surfaces in the enclosures are maintained on a regular basis and that surfaces which cannot be readily cleaned are replaced when worn. Dust and animal hair were also observed accumulated on the tops of the primary enclosures and the food receptacle lids. Multiple ventilation fans were observed with an excess accumulation of dust in the metal wire covers. Failure to adequately clean the premises can lead to illness, transmission of diseases, create a fire hazard, and attract unwanted pests. The facility must ensure that the premises, including housing facilities are kept clean and in good repair to protect the animals from injury to facilitate the prescribed husbandry practices set forth in this subpart.
