Two enclosures housing an adult female dog with 5 puppies in each enclosure has carpet in the whelping box that has been torn and damaged by the dogs. These carpets have long strands of fiber in the torn areas that are easily accessible by the juvenile dogs. Frayed edges and long fiber strands can be injurious to the dogs as they could ingest the material or cause entrapment of the juvenile dogs. All surfaces must be maintained on a regular basis. Surfaces of housing facilities - including houses, dens, and other furniture-type fixtures and objects within the facility - that cannot be readily cleaned and sanitized, must be replaced when worn or soiled. The facility has not performed fecal sampling according to the schedule described in the program of veterinary care. The last recorded results for fecal sampling provided by the facility were reported on 18 January 2024. The facility representative stated this is usually performed during the annual kennel exam but could not provide a record of the sampling in 2025. APHIS personnel spoke with the office of the Attending Veterinarian who stated no fecal sampling was conducted in 2025. The program of veterinary care states fecal exams will be performed annually on 10% of the animals for intestinal parasites. Failure to follow the parasite control program approved by the attending veterinarian may not properly protect the dogs from parasites and may allow illness to go undetected and untreated, which may cause pain and unnecessary discomfort to the dogs. The facility must follow the parasite control testing schedule approved by the attending veterinarian to protect the dogs from parasites and other pests (worms, coccidia, giardia and heartworm) and have the dogs tested annually.
