- Medical records not maintained
Certain medical records were not maintained for dogs sold and held by the licensee. The licensee stated that he performs monthly preventive care and treatment, according to the written Program of Veterinary Care, to ensure unmatted hair coats, properly trimmed nails, and clean and health eyes, ears, skin and teeth. Additionally, the licensee stated that he administers heartworm prevention, treatment for intestinal parasites, and vaccinations according to the written Program of Veterinary Care. However, at the time of the inspection the following medical prevention checks and treatments were not recorded: 1) monthly preventive health care and treatment for all the adult dogs, 2) monthly administration of heartworm prevention for all of the adult dogs, 3) annual distemper virus, parvovirus, and leptospirosis vaccination for some of the adult dogs, 4) distemper virus, parvovirus vaccination and intestinal parasite medication administration for litters of puppies that had been sold by the licensee since the last inspection. Medical records are essential for APHIS inspectors to evaluate the quality of medical care provided by the facility and ensure the animals are protected from disease, injury, and illness. Dealers must keep copies of medical records for dogs and make the records available for APHIS inspection. These records must include routine husbandry procedures, such as vaccinations, preventive medical procedures, or treatments, performed on all animals. To be corrected by the close of business on 11/8/2024.
