The veterinarian diagnosed that the beagle had interdigital cysts on January 5, 2026, and prescribed a treatment of topical antibiotic ointment and oral antibiotics to be given “until better”. At the time of inspection, the beagle’s enclosure has colored tabs on it which indicate that she is still under treatment and reminding staff to give the medications, but there is no record that confirms that the treatments were given. Complete medical records, including records confirming that prescribed treatments are performed, are important to ensure that the veterinarian’s directives are being followed. Dealers and research facilities must keep such medical records and make them available for APHIS inspection. Some of the skin in these hairless areas was red and crusted. The dog also had two areas of moist red hair loss on the left front paw (about 5mm in diameter). According to facility representatives, this condition was not identified prior to the inspection. This has prevented the attending veterinarian from the opportunity to provide medical care for the animal.
