• Transport enclosures inadequate ventilation

  The transport enclosures for 18 hedgehogs did not provide adequate ventilation openings to ensure proper airflow during transport. The long sides of the transport enclosures had four ventilation openings measuring 0.05 sq inches each with the total surface area of the long sides measuring approximately 49.5 sq inches. This equated to 0.4% of the total surface area for ventilation on the long sides. On the shorter sides of the transport enclosures, two ventilation openings were present and measured 0.05 sq inches each with the total surface area of the short sides measuring 28 sq inches. This equated to 0.35% of the total surface area for ventilation on the short sides. The long sides would need a total of 3.96 sq inches and the short sides would need 2.25 sq inches for the ventilation to be compliant (8% of each side). Inadequate ventilation openings can decrease the airflow within the enclosure and impact the health of the hedgehogs. Primary transport enclosures for subpart F animals must contain ventilation openings that are at least 16 percent of the total surface area if on two walls or at least 8 percent of the total surface area if on four walls. The primary transport enclosures were altered to allow for more airflow on the date of inspection (21MAR2024).

• Vaccines not up to date

  The facility has not followed vaccination protocol outlined in the program of veterinary care. The facility has not administered the rabies vaccine to six shetland sheep dogs (microchip numbers 7306, 1472, 8069, 8072, 7145, 0852) in accordance with the approved vaccination schedule. Failure to provide vaccinations on a schedule approved by the attending veterinarian leads to an increased risk of contagious and/or deadly diseases in the dogs.

• Excessive chew damage around run and birthing box entrances

  The facility has excessive chew damage around 5 entrances of the outdoor runs that house 17 adult dogs. There are also 3 enclosures that have excessive chew damage around the entrance of the whelping boxes that house 3 adult dogs and 6 puppies. Chew damage does not allow for proper sanitization, can lead to an increased risk of disease in the dogs and can create sharp points in the damaged areas.
