An adult female poodle “Coco” (Microchip 99100300036) was positive for heartworm antigen during her annual heartworm test which was reported on 18 February 2025. The facility recognized the positive result but did not communicate with the AV regarding treatment recommendations. When asked how the animal was treated the representative responded that injectable ivermectin was given orally once in addition to the monthly prevention dose per the program of veterinary care. When reviewing the program of veterinary care for heartworm disease it states to contact your veterinarian for various treatment options but does not describe a method to treat heartworm disease. The dose of ivermectin was administered on 3 March 2025 per available medical records. When speaking with the AV he explained to the facility representative that ivermectin alone does not treat or resolve an adult heartworm infection and a different medication would need to be administered by the AV. Failure to contact the attending veterinarian in a timely manner when illness or medical conditions such as heartworm disease are identified by the facility or testing results can lead to a delay in treatment for the animal with potential worsening of the condition, unnecessary suffering, or even death.
