One primary enclosure containing two adult dogs was found to have the metal threshold between the indoor and outdoor portions of the enclosure in disrepair. This threshold had broken and bent in toward the enclosure and contained multiple sharp points. These points had small tufts of hair attached indicating that the animals were snagging the threshold as they went between the indoor and outdoor. This broken threshold may cause injury to the dogs and the area is difficult to appropriately clean and sanitize with the bent and broken metal. Primary enclosures must be constructed and maintained so that they protect the dogs from injury. Correct by: 10- November 2016

During the inspection a 3 year old male Yorkie (#20, known as “Tommy“) was observed to have an excessive buildup of brown tarter that encased multiple teeth and obstructed the view of the normal shapes of the teeth in addition to receding gum lines. The teeth had not been observed by the licensee and the attending veterinarian had not been contacted for any treatment prior to this inspection. Upon contacting the attending veterinarian, he confirmed there had not been contact with the clinic regarding the animal’s dental issues. The buildup of tarter and debris on the teeth can cause possible health issues if left untreated or managed on a regular basis. **The licensee must contact the attending veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment of any dogs with a large buildup of tarter or any gum or tooth issues. The licensee should check all regulated animals regularly for any health and dental issues. In addition, the licensee must have a mechanism of direct and frequent communication with his attending veterinarian on all animal health issues, to include dental issues, that are observed within the facility. On today's inspection, there are 7 adult dogs being housed in a primary enclosure located in the barn. The walls of the enclosure are constructed of wood and stone type materials. In addition, the flooring is constructed of dirt and savings. These areas are not constructed of materials that allow for proper cleaning or sanitation. The Licensee must ensure that all primary enclosures, including the enclosure in the barn, are constructed of materials that enable all surfaces in contact with the dogs to be readily cleaned and sanitized in accordance with Sec. 3.11(b) of this subpart. On today's inspection, over 50% of the food receptacles have a build up of dirt, debris, food wast or excreta. The only food receptacle currently being used in the enclosure inside the barn was over half way filled with dirt and debris. In addition, 5 food receptacles in the kennel and/or whelping area had a brown to black built up on/under the lip of the receptacle where the dogs access their food. Improper cleaning exposes the dogs to unnecessary disease hazards. The Licensee must ensure that all food receptacles are cleaned and sanitized at least once every 2 weeks using one of the methods prescribed in paragraph (b)(3) of this section, and more often if necessary to prevent an accumulation of dirt, debris, food waste, excreta, and other disease hazards. The facility does not have medical records for vaccinations and preventative care given. The licensee reports all adult dogs had the required rabies, distemper, and parvovirus vaccines in Spring 2024, along with deworming, but there is no written record. Medical records are important so that adequate veterinary care can be assessed during inspections. Correct by ensuring copies of medical records, complete with the names of all vaccinations and treatments administered and the dates of administration, and the identification of the dog are created and maintained and are made available during inspection. Correct from December 3, 2024, onward.

The licensee did not create and maintain a medical record after treating a male Havanese, “Archie” #9673, for urinary and ear problems. On 10/29/24, a routine physical examination revealed a urinary issue with the dog. The licensee brought the dog into the Attending Veterinarian’s (AV) clinic on 11/6/24 for further workup. The AV diagnosed two issues and discharged the dog with three different medications. The inspector called the AV's office to confirm these details. The licensee reports he completed all medications as prescribed, however, there is no medical record documenting this treatment plan. Accurate medical records help to ensure dogs at licensed facilities are receiving adequate veterinary care. Correct by ensuring that the facility keep copies of medical records which accurately identify the animal, the problem identified, examination findings, test results, plan for treatment and care, and treatment procedures when performed.
